Blood of Shadows Chapter 4

 Chapter 3: The First Attack

The night was eerily quiet as Elena strolled down the cobblestone street, her thoughts consumed by the crypt and the strange man she’d seen. The air seemed heavier, the shadows darker, as though the city itself held its breath. She clutched her satchel tightly, her pulse quickening as she sensed eyes on her.

From the corner of her vision, movement flickered. Figures emerged from the shadows, their eyes glinting with a predatory hunger that chilled her to the bone. They were not human—that much was clear. Their movements were too fast, their presence too menacing.

“Look who we’ve found,” one of them hissed, a tall figure with pale skin and unnaturally sharp teeth. “The girl who woke the prince.”

Elena froze, her breath caught in her throat. “What are you talking about?” she managed, her voice trembling.

Before they could answer, they lunged. She turned to run, her heart pounding in her chest, but the vampires were impossibly quick. One grabbed her arm, yanking her back. She screamed, clawing at her captor, but it was like fighting against steel.

Just as her panic reached its peak, a shadow descended. Kain.

He moved like a storm—silent, deadly, and unstoppable. His crimson eyes glowed in the dark, a terrifying beacon of power. With a single swipe, he tore the first vampire away from Elena, sending it crashing into a nearby wall.

“Kain!” she gasped, her fear mingling with a strange sense of relief.

“Stay behind me,” he commanded, his voice low and lethal.

The rogue vampires snarled and regrouped, their focus shifting to Kain. “So, the prince has risen,” one of them sneered. “You should’ve stayed buried.”

Kain smirked, his fangs glinting. “You should’ve stayed dead.”

The battle erupted in a blur of speed and violence. Kain was a force of nature, every movement calculated and deadly. He tore through the rogues with a feral grace, his strength far surpassing theirs despite his weakened state. Blood splattered the pavement, and guttural growls filled the air.

Elena could only watch, trembling as she pressed herself against the wall. The man she had awoken was no ordinary being. He was something ancient, something terrifying—and yet, as he shielded her from the attackers, she couldn’t deny the strange pull she felt toward him.

One of the vampires broke through Kain’s defenses and lunged for Elena. Time seemed to slow as she raised her arms in a futile attempt to defend herself. But before it could reach her, Kain was there, his hand plunging through the rogue’s chest with a sickening crunch.

The vampire crumpled to the ground, lifeless. Kain turned to her, his eyes still glowing, his breathing heavy. “Are you hurt?”

Elena shook her head, unable to find her voice. Her eyes locked on his bloodied hands, the faint tremor in his body. He wasn’t invincible, despite what she had just witnessed.

The last of the rogues fled into the shadows, hissing promises of retribution. Kain let them go, his focus solely on Elena.

She took a shaky step back, her mind racing. “What… what are you?” she whispered.

He hesitated, his crimson eyes softening as he looked at her. “Something you should fear,” he said, his voice tinged with regret.

But as he turned to leave, she found herself reaching out. “Wait!”

Kain paused, his back to her, his silhouette framed by the moonlight. “You shouldn’t follow me, Elena,” he said quietly. “For your own safety.”

And then he was gone, leaving her alone in the bloodstained street, her heart pounding with more questions than answers.
